For the second year running, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is included in the general classification, specifically in the 401-500 range, in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), or Shanghai Ranking, which is compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
The UPC has maintained its positions in several disciplines. Specifically, in the Engineering, Technology and Computer Sciences field, it is ranked in the 101-150 range. In the Computer Science subject, it has also maintained its position from previous editions and is ranked in the 101-150 range.
This year, however, it has not been ranked in the Mathematics subject, which previously included ten Spanish universities and now includes eight, as neither the UPC or the University of Valladolid have made the Ranking.
The presence and weighting of the indicators used to compile the Ranking are modulated to adapt them to the particularities of each classification. The indicators that correspond to each of the four lists in which the UPC has been ranked in one or another of the editions are the articles published in the journals Nature and Science, articles indexed in SCIE and SSCI, former students and professors awarded Nobel Prizes and Field Medals, highly cited researchers, performance per capita, the percentage of articles published in journals positioned in the top 20% of the JCR in each field, and spending on engineering research. The bibliometric indicators are obtained from the Web of Science database.

The world's top 500 universities
The Shanghai Ranking ranks the world’s top 500 universities in the general classification and publishes ten additional lists or rankings: five by subject (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Business and Economics) and five by field (Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Engineering, Technology and Computer Sciences, Life and Agriculture Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy and Social Sciences). The presence and weighting of the indicators used to compile the Ranking are modulated to adapt them to the particularities of each classification.
