CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA), a leading IT management company, announced the creation of a European research centre that will be set up and managed in cooperation with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) located in Barcelona, Spain.

The aim of the initiative, called CA Labs Europe, is to become a centre of innovation in Europe for knowledge creation and advanced research results. Cooperation will be driven through the Innovation and Technology Centre (CIT-UPC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC), which is recognised as one of the most advanced technical university environments in Spain and Europe. CA Labs Europe site will be located at the K2M building of the UPC Park, in Barcelona.

“CA Labs Europe will conduct advanced research in the cloud management solutions that have become so critical to the success of every organisation in today’s technology-centric world,” says Dr. Donald Ferguson, executive vice-president and chief technology officer at CA Technologies. “With its abundance of top technical talent—and with so many superb companies operating in the surrounding area—the UPC will provide a tremendously fertile environment for important innovations.”

CA Labs Europe and the UPC will collaborate on the following:

- Research projects related to IT management technologies, including cloud computing solutions, which respond to current and future needs in industry.

- The promotion and development of technology and business ideas proposed by researchers from the UPC, other Spanish and European universities and businesses.

CA Labs Europe will enable students in the final year of technical or business degrees to obtain real-world business experience. It will also provide opportunities for them to work with CA Technologies experts on innovative research.

The rector of the UPC, Dr. Antoni Giró, highlighted "the importance of collaborating with a global company such as CA Technologies, which has extensive experience in IT management, because it allows us to value the results of both basic and applied research conducted in our labs, such as the Data Management Group (DAMA) research centre, and to contribute to generating technological innovation for the corporate sector."

CA Labs Europe will launch its operations in Barcelona this September. It will focus on five projects that will initially involve 10 researchers from CA Technologies and the UPC, specifically the Data Management Group (DAMA), a research centre belonging to the TECNIO network of the Government of Catalonia, with the aim of producing research that is oriented towards technology transfer and cooperation with industry. The projects will address security and privacy in a cloud environment, cloud forensics, machine translation tools for multilingual product localisation, efficient visualisation of very large systems, and new IT business models.

The Ministry of Enterprise and Labour of the Government of Catalonia, through “Invest in Catalonia” and the New York office of ACC1Ó, provided CA Technologies with advice and information that would help to establish this new European research centre.

The new university-enterprise laboratory will be part of CA Technologies’ global research organisation CA Labs, which was established in 2005 to strengthen relationships with external research communities. CA Labs operates in close collaboration with universities, professional associations and government organisations around the world. It is currently conducting more than 30 research projects related to new products, emerging technologies and IT management methods for companies, with the participation of more than 90 researchers and in collaboration with 35 universities in 10 countries.

CA Technologies has operated in Spain for 30 years. The Barcelona site, which started its operations in 1984 and currently has a workforce of more than 125 employees, has become an important centre for the company in Europe, having incorporated in recent years various teams dedicated to development activities, technical support and customer care for the European region.
