UPC ranked 84th and as Spain’s top technical university

Among 100 most innovative European universities

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) ranks 84th and is the top Spanish technical university in Thomson Reuters’ ranking of Europe’s Most Innovative Universities – 2017, a list that identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and help drive the global economy.

For the second year running, the UPC has earned a place on Thomson Reuters’ ranking of Europe’s Most Innovative Universities. In the 2017 edition, the University is ranked 84th, up one place from last year. Among Spanish institutions, it remains the top technical university and is in fourth position overall.

The first step in producing this ranking, which was compiled in partnership with Clarivate Analytics, was to select the institutions with the most articles published in Web of Science–indexed journals from 2010 to 2015 and eliminate those that filed fewer than 50 patents with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in the same period. The next step was to consider a series of indicators related to scientific output (impact of citations of journal articles related to patents or from the business sector, percentage of journal articles produced in collaboration with industry, and total number of articles published) and to the patents filed (patent volume, patent success, global patents, patent citations, patent citation impact, and percentage of patents cited by other patents).

UPC’s scientific output in mathematics and computer science and international orientation highlighted in latest rankings

In other recently published rankings, the UPC has maintained its position as the leading European university in scientific output in mathematics and computer science. The University has also scored highly for its international orientation. In the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2017, the UPC stands out as the top European university and the 21st in the world in scientific output in mathematics and computer science for the period 2012–2015. And in the latest edition of Ranking CYD, compiled by the Knowledge and Development Foundation, the UPC scores highly on international orientation.
