The UPC improves its position among the world's top 500 universities in the Taiwan Ranking
The UPC has again been ranked in the general National Taiwan University (NTU) Ranking and moves up this year from the 445th to the 439th position. The ranking classifies the 500 best universities in the world according to their scientific output and the impact of their scientific publications. The UPC continues to be the national leader in the Engineering field and in the Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering subjects. For the first time, it is also the best in Spain in Mathematics.
On 10 October, the latest edition of the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities was published by the National Taiwan University (NTU), also known as the NTU or Taiwan Ranking. The Ranking classifies the world's top 500 higher education institutions on the basis of their productivity and impact and the excellence of their scientific output, for which it takes into account a number of bibliometric indicators from Thomson Reuters's Web of Science database.
The methodology combines bibliometric indicators that consider both long-term and the most recent results, although the general classification in which the UPC is ranked 439th takes into account the absolute value of the first four indicators that appear in the table below, which are, firstly, those relating to scientific productivity, that is, the number of articles published in the last 11 years (2004-2014) and the number of articles published in 2014, and secondly, the first two indicators, which refer to the impact of publications, that is, the number of citations in the same period (2004-2014) and the number of citations in the past two years (2013-2014).
Regarding the classifications by field and subject, universities are ranked in a maximum of 300 positions according to their score. This year, the UPC has again been ranked among the world's top 100 universities in the field of Engineering, in 93rd place, and is the leading university in Spain in this field.
The UPC is ranked in nine subjects in the 2015 edition. Of these nine subjects, it continues to lead, in the Spanish university system, in Electrical Engineering (which includes Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications), for which it is ranked 40th in the world; Civil Engineering, for which it is ranked 50th in the world; and, for the first time, Mathematics, for which it goes up 31 places to the top position in Spain (and 61st in the world). In the remaining subjects it is the top technical or polytechnic university in Spain in Computer Science (59th in the world), Materials Science (204th), Geosciences (248th) and Physics (262nd).
