The UPC moves into the 400 best universities in the world in the 2016 Shanghai Ranking

The UPC has risen from the 401-500 to the 301-400 range in the global Academic Ranking of World Universities, better known as the Shanghai Ranking. It has also risen in all other geographical areas.

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) was included in the general classification of the Shanghai Ranking for the third consecutive year, reaching the 301-400 range for the first time.

In Spain, the UPC moved up from the 9-13 range to the 4-9 range, and in the other geographic areas it was also ranked higher than in the previous edition. Among the universities of Catalonia, the UPC is in the 2-4 range; among the Spanish technical universities it is in the 1-2 range; and in Europe it rose from the 157-210 range to the 123-159 range.

The general classification of the Shanghai Ranking includes the top 500 universities worldwide. It considers every university that has Nobel Laureates, Fields Medallists, papers published in Nature or Science or highly cited researchers. It also includes universities that have a significant number of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded or the Social Sciences Citation Index. The reference bibliographic database is the Web of Science and the source for highly cited researchers is the December 2015 listing of Highly Cited Researchers by Thomson Reuters.

From 2003 to 2009, the Shanghai Ranking was published by the Centre for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Since 2009 it has been published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an independent organisation devoted to higher education research and consulting.
