The UPC has made it onto the rankings in fourteen of the forty-six disciplines considered in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017, four more than in the previous edition, and has earned a place in four broad subject fields, one more than in the previous edition.
This year’s QS subject rankings integrate the former QS World University Rankings by Faculty, assessing five broad fields: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management. Each field is further broken down into a series of disciplines, making a total of forty-six subjects: ten in Arts and Humanities, six in Engineering and Technology, nine in Life Sciences and Medicine, seven in Natural Sciences, and fourteen in Social Sciences and Management.
At each level, the four components combined to produce the results focus on the research reputation of institutions. The factors taken into account are academic reputation, based on a survey completed by scholars; employer reputation (survey-based); research citations per paper; and a score based on the h-index. The weighting of these factors varies from subject to subject.
In the subject rankings, the UPC fares particularly well in Architecture, where it is positioned twenty-sixth globally (up three from last year), among the top ten European universities (ninth), and first in Spain. In Civil and Structural Engineering, the University ranks thirty-four (up five from last year). It is also among the top hundred universities in the world in Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mathematics (51-100 range). The University also made it onto the rankings in other subjects: Computer Science and Information Systems (101-150), Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing (101-150), Statistics and Operational Research (101-150), Materials Science (151-200), Environmental Sciences (201-250), and Physics and Astronomy (251-300). It is included in the rankings for the first time in several subject areas: Art and Design (101-150), Chemical Engineering (201-250), Agriculture and Forestry (201-250), and Business and Management Studies (251-300).
As for the broad subject areas considered, the UPC is ranked 84th in Engineering and Technology, 299th in the Natural Sciences, 363rd in Social Sciences and Management (for the first time), and 385th in Arts and Humanities.
