The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) has retained its position as the top technical university in Spain in the general classification of the 2017 Best Global Universities Rankings (known as the US News rankings). In the general classification of the 2017 Best Global Universities Rankings published on 25 October, the UPC is still the top technical university in Spain and the tenth best Spanish university. It is in 188th place in Europe and has risen from 415th to 425th place in the world ranking. It has progressively improved its global score over the three years of the rankings: from 32.1 in the 2015 rankings and 46.6 in the 2016 rankings to 52.6 in the 2017 rankings.

The Best Global Universities Rankings are published by US News & World Report and managed by Clarivate Analytics, a name used by the Onex Corporation and Baring Private Equity Asia, which recently acquired a number of products from Thomson Reuters, including the Web of Science.

The rankings evaluate universities using 12 indicators on scientific output and reputation that are weighted according to the type of classification. In the general classification, two of these indicators are new this year: the number and the percentage of papers among the most cited 1%. These new indicators replace the number of doctoral degrees and the number of doctoral degrees per faculty member, which were used in the two previous editions.

In addition to the overall ranking, there are 22 additional lists by areas. The number of institutions positioned in the general classification has risen from 750 to 1,000; in the subject classification it is now 200 or 400, depending on the field.

In the 2017 rankings, the UPC is listed for the first time in Materials Science and for the second year running in Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics.

In Engineering it occupies 46th place in the world and is still the top university in Spain, far ahead of the Universitat Politècnica de València, in 153rd place. It is still among the top 50 universities in the world, though it has fallen several positions worldwide (from 37th place in 2015) and in Europe (from 10th to 11th place).

In the area of Computer Science, the UPC has risen from 43rd to 37th position worldwide. It is the top university in Spain and one of the ten best in Europe. In Mathematics it has fallen from 132nd to 134th place worldwide but is still the top technical university in Spain. Finally, in Materials Science, it is in 226th place worldwide, in third place in Catalonia and in first place among Spanish technical universities.
